Clinical care for adults battling trauma
Experiencing a traumatic event (for example, a life-threatening accident, physical or sexual assault, motor vehicle accidents, animal attacks, combat, learning about a loved one’s accidental or violent death) can cause significant distress and disruption. If you or your loved one needs help coping with and recovering from a traumatic experience, then the National Center for Warrior Resiliency is available to help you.
Located in UT Health San Antonio’s Behavioral Health and Wellness Center at 5788 Eckhert Road, San Antonio, Texas 78240, the National Center for Warrior Resiliency provides trauma-focused psychological assessment and time-limited, evidenced-based treatments for PTSD and commonly co-occurring trauma-related conditions. Patients will be offered between 5 to 15 sessions. Treatment can be completed weekly or in a massed format (e.g., multiple sessions per week for 2-3 weeks). These services are provided free of charge thanks to grant funding and private donations.
Available Treatments:
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD (CPT) is a first line, empirically supported cognitive behavioral treatment for PTSD that targets maladaptive trauma-related beliefs.
Prolonged Exposure for PTSD (PE) is a first line, empirically supported cognitive behavioral treatment for PTSD that utilizes exposure-based interventions to target psychological mechanisms (i.e., experiential, and behavioral avoidance; maladaptive cognitive changes) that are thought to maintain trauma-related symptoms.
Written Exposure Therapy (WET) is an evidence-based PTSD treatment that utilizes exposure-based approaches with writing to facilitate trauma-related processing.
Co-Occurring Relationship Problems
Cognitive Behavioral Conjoint Therapy for PTSD (CBCT) is an evidence-based conjoint PTSD treatment that targets PTSD symptoms while enhancing intimate relationship functioning through communication skills, behavioral exposure, and cognitive restructuring.
Prevention and Relationship Education Program (PREP) is an evidence-based relationship education curricula that teaches healthy relationship skills including communication, conflict management, and problem-solving skills to enhance relationship satisfaction and functioning.
Sleep Disorders
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is first-line treatment for chronic insomnia through identifying and replacing thoughts and behaviors related to sleep problems while promoting healthy sleep habits.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Nightmares (CBT-N) is a first-line, evidence-based treatment for chronic nightmares designed to reduce nightmares frequency and distress through exposure, dream rescription and stimulus control.
Trauma-Related Depression and Anxiety
The Unified Protocol (UP) for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders is a manualized and evidence-based intervention designed to address core mechanisms of co-occurring psychopathology. The UP targets maladaptive responses to negative emotions and stressors (e.g. major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder). Patients will be offered 12 sessions.
