Open to military & veterans at Fort Hood
STRONG STAR researchers have developed a new posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment designed specifically for service members and veterans who have experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and they are testing it in a pilot study at Fort Hood’s Intrepid Spirit Center.
Called Non-Trauma Treatment for TBI and Comorbid PTSD, or T3 PTSD, the brief treatment does not involve recalling and discussing your traumatic experience, as most leading PTSD treatments do. Instead, this eight-session intervention combines symptom tracking, relaxation, stress management, problem-solving, biofeedback and cognitive therapy strategies to improve self-management of symptoms.
T3 PTSD has been adapted from an evidence-based treatment for posttraumatic headache that was shown in a large clinical trial to be as effective as a top, trauma-focused therapy in reducing co-occurring PTSD symptoms, while being well-received by patients. The same techniques are incorporated in the new therapy, but with the focus on PTSD with TBI.
